Drawing Connections – The Power of Networking and Professionalism in Fashion Illustration
In an industry where visuals speak volumes and first impressions last, the role of networking and professionalism has never been more crucial – especially for live event illustrators navigating the luxury fashion world. During a recent talk, artist Anouck Gillyboeuf and FIDA founder, Patrick Morgan, shared compelling insights into how artists can carve out their niche, build trust with clients, and cultivate long-term success.
Anouck, whose journey began with an internship at Chanel, spoke candidly about launching her business in the UAE without a formal artistic background. What she lacked in traditional training, she made up for in determination, strategic thinking, and a clear personal brand. From securing her first Chanel commission through proactive outreach to establishing a distinctive, emotionally resonant style, Anouck’s story underscores how professionalism is often as important as talent.
“Mentioning names like Chanel or Dior helps build trust,” she noted, highlighting how associating with respected brands can open doors – particularly when dealing with luxury clients who demand excellence in every detail. Patrick Morgan agreed, adding that high-end brands expect more than skill; they want artists who understand the language of luxury, and who present themselves accordingly.
Both speakers emphasised the value of building a network – not just with creative directors and senior figures, but also with junior staff, who are often more accessible and just as influential in the decision-making process. “You never know who’s watching or where a conversation might lead,” Patrick advised, noting that maintaining even casual connections can result in unexpected opportunities.
Their conversation also touched on the underrepresentation of illustrators at major fashion events like Paris Fashion Week. Anouck, often the only illustrator on site, uses this to her advantage – capturing the emotion and energy of runway moments and sharing her work online in real-time. Her visibility, coupled with a polished presentation and consistent social media presence, has cemented her reputation and built credibility in a fast-moving industry.
In the ever-evolving world of fashion illustration, technical ability is just one piece of the puzzle. As Anouck and Patrick made clear, it’s the artists who invest in their brand, behave with professionalism, and nurture meaningful connections who ultimately stand out – and thrive.
