Wenching Tang is an artist who finds beauty in everyday moments, transforming them into visual stories that evoke emotion and connection. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for the familiar and personal, whether through a polished digital piece or a spontaneous hand-drawn creation.
When did you first know you were interested in creating art?
Probably around 3 or 4, when my Mom handed me paint and let me draw anything on the tile recklessly.
Were there any pivotal moments during your education that changed the way you view or create art?
Studying abroad was a huge influence. I was inspired by lots of ways to tell a story visually and learned to embrace and execute different illustration styles.
Who or what are your biggest artistic inspirations, and how do they influence your practice?
David Hockney and Pierre Bonnard for their bold colours and Henri Matisse for his effortless lines. I also do Chinese calligraphy which affects the way I use line.
What are your go-to mediums, and does the emotion you’re conveying affect your choice?
Mostly, I do digital drawing for commissions because of the efficiency, but hand-drawn when I want to keep it personal and raw. The choice depends on the project - digital for polish, hand-drawn for intimacy and spontaneity.
What’s your favourite subject to illustrate, and why?
People and everyday objects, things that feel deeply connected to daily life. I’m drawn to anything that evokes a sense of familiarity and emotion, turning ordinary moments into meaningful stories.
How does your relationship with nature, cityscapes, or the environment reflect in your work?
I love travelling and exploring new places. I often take photos of the places I visit and incorporate the elements that inspire me - whether it’s the colours, shapes, or the emotions they evoke - into my illustrations. It’s my way of blending personal experiences with creative expression.
Where in the world do you find the most inspiration for your illustrations?
The MRT or subway, where I can observe people during my commutes, is always a source of inspiration. Art museums and galleries are also places where I recharge creatively and find endless ideas.
How do your inspirations evolve, and do you see patterns in the art, books, or music that guide you?
My inspirations evolve with my experiences and the phases of life I go through. I notice patterns in what guides me - chill lofi music sets a relaxed, introspective tone, while art and books with bold lines or poetic details always resonate with me.
What hobbies or passions outside illustration might surprise people, and do they sneak into your work?
One of my passions outside illustration is observing my surroundings during long walks. It’s a simple activity, but it helps me notice the little details and moments that often find their way into my work.
Tell us about your favourite projects, and why they’re special.
My first editorial for World of Interiors is a standout project, as it was my first experience transforming words into visuals. I also valued creating a poster for Fine Act on environmental issues, showcasing how art can drive meaningful change. Additionally, the live portrait event with Dior Beauty was memorable, allowing me to capture people’s essence through observation and spontaneous drawing.
